there's still incentive to earn more - you keep most of it.

As for the money 'rightfully' belonging to you - the entire monetary system is created and regulated by the government you live in. Your tax is what supports that. It's not all 'rightfully' yours.

How is it fair that people who have very little after paying for their most basic living expenses get most of it taken away in taxes, while those that earn lots have a much smaller percentage taken?

Going by your reasoning, everyone should pay a flat poll tax, and _that_ was established to be inequitable long ago.
