If I have the capability to earn more money, but all that does is "earn" me the right to give that money away, why make more? It removes incentive to work and improve.

You made a good, ideal point earlier. The problem is, as it stands, our system is not ideal. Not even close. 50% of the top tax brackets may well be 'disposable income', but it still rightfully belongs to the person who earned the money, not to the government to reallocate *my* (or any other person's) resources as someone else/government official sees fit.
At the same time, people starve. Inequality on both ends.
