Ideally, taxation works on a simple principle: A relatively constant percentage of your _disposable_ income is paid in taxes to pay for common services. Your disposable income is your total income less the cost of a basic standard of living, so for people with low incomes, they have little disposable income, and their gross tax rate is low. Those with higher incomes have higher disposable income, so their gross tax rate is higher.
Seems sensible to me. |
