The Belgian passport has a similar system of micro-perforations, although it's much higher in resolution. On the inside flaps there's also a nice little "how to spot a fake"-guide for customs officials around the world. In this guide it points out the micro perforations, as well as the regular watermark, but nowhere does it specify that the micro perforations are supposed to portray the bearer and should thus match the photograph, whereas the watermark portrays our head of state: HRH Albert II. It took quite some time and a supervisor before the Vietnamese customs officer would let me in.
