...that Democrats seem to be much more willing to criticize members of their own party than Republicans are of theirs?

Ever notice how Democrats' defenses of their party members tend not to try to explain away the actions themselves, but rather to put them accurately in context; while Republicans' defenses of their party members tend to try to explain how there was no crime, that they're being framed or maliciously prosecuted, or that the law being applied doesn't apply to them?

A pox on both their houses anyway, but there's pretty obviously a lesser of two evils here.
