And please enlighten me about the "covenant". Translations draw up a blank in this context.

Anyway: the Exodus was not necessarily a result of the plagues. The plagues were a result of the Pharaoh's stubbornness to let Moses' people go. The plagues were directed at the Pharaoh, and not the Israelites, who could've wandered through the desert without each first born dieing (and the plagues didn't even change the Pharaoh's mind, since he sent his soldiers after them. But AFAIK, the Pharaoh himself never had to suffer consequences for his actions directly, only his subordinates. Of course, we can see that as a parable: That one still has to decide for oneself, what is good and what is bad, but as far as I can see, the Egyptian populace didn't get that chance with the plagues).
