| The overarching theme of Exodus... |

...is that people are stupid, stubborn, and prideful. God provided in the desert. People b5ed. God appeared on Mt. Sinai... when Moses lingered too long on the mountain, the people set up the Golden Calf, and started backsliding.
Do you really think God would have broken his covenant at that point? Moses brought it up in defending his people... it's a nice teaching device/reminder that Moses would have to bring it up in "defense." God remembers the covenant, WE forget it.
Remember also that a big point of wandering in the desert was so that the generation that remembered Egypt would live its life out and pass away first...so there'd be no more whining that living in slavery in Egypt had been "better."
In the Old Testament, people are shown as childish, and the Lord spanks. :P How is he to make a great nation out of sheeple? Faith is a journey, a responsibility, a discipline. It's not that God isn't merciful. It's that we're really, really stupid and lazy. |
