have been that it was a punishment - it was a consequence of acting inconsistently with what God wanted. It wouldn't have been a choice if there was no significant difference between the consequences of the two possible activities.

Since we believe God to be all-loving (I believe you referred to this previously), we feel reasonable in describing the situation as the necessary consequences of misbehavior, and in describing those consequences as the arrangements of a loving God.
