And while God can kill and restore life, He wants to be emulated (he created Man in His own image, after all), and as such, cannot arbitrarily kill people, or sentence a whole generation because a leader refused to follow Him.
The burning Bush involves God's demand that Abraham (or was it Moses? I forgot..) sacrifice his son (first-born, IIRC). The kicker is: He stopped this, and showed a capacity for mercy (after all, he wouldn't have had to intervene). This mercy has to extent to all human beings (again: created in his own image). As Jesus did when he walked the Earth.
In regard to slavery: Slaves were property. A commodity to be sold. They weren't people, since they could be killed at any time, and had no rights in any sense. The most modern approach to that had the Greek and the Romans in antiquity, where slaves did have some right (they could even earn money to buy their own freedom, if their owner allowed them to). |
