The Old Testament's big on capital punishment. It's not like society had the resources to incarcerate and rehabilitate three millennia ago. To spend valuable resources on criminals would have been unfair to the innocent. And two big differences between man killing and God killing are that (a) God granted the original life taken and (b) God can restore a taken life should He choose.
Slavery was different back then too. Unlike slavery in the industrial world, slaves were legally persons and had a pretty similar standard of living to their masters (i.e., s6). Someone willing to sell a child into slavery would probably be "poor" while someone able to afford a child would be "rich". This could allow a child a better life.
I'm *pretty* sure that the burning bush didn't involve a human sacrifice. But I'm curious, if you were God, how would you have gotten the Israelites out of Egypt?
