the el cheapo NIC is a replacement for my Celeron500-based 'nix NATbox (i.e. router). I've got 3 PCI NICs for it and only one works anymore. It'd be something I'd get with either set of parts. I'd go GIGe but my switch is only 10/100 and I don't do much cross-network transfer, and the cable connection is only 6mbit. Heck, the more expensive motherboard on there has dual GIGe onboard as well as a wireless card built in.
As for SLI, I figure I can throw a couple 8xxx cards in it in a couple years when some new game comes out. I know I won't be able to find a match to the card(s) on those lists in a couple years, but I've always tried to buy as much motherboard as possible when doing major upgrades like this. Also, it seems that the better chipsets out there are SLI, and their non-SLI equivalents/counterparts don't perform as well, even compared to the SLI ones in single card mode. Assuming I've been reading the wrong reviews and/or not understanding things, do you have a suggestion for a chipset that runs reliably and quickly and will handle future CPUs with minimal fuss? I'm not completely tied to nVidia on the chipset side as much as the graphics, but I had poor performance from a Via chipset with my current CPU a couple years ago, and my nForce 400 ultra motherboard has been solid as a rock.
The RAM is something I haven't looked at in a while. I'm currently running 2x512MB of DDR333 from Roseweil (they also made my power supply, which I won't have to upgrade thankfully) and just threw the GeIL in there cause I'd heard of the name and it was cheap. I've learned to stay away from most of the no-name brands. I'll see what Kingston has to offer.
HDD: I've been a loyal Seagate customer for 5+ years (and the original 40GB ATA100 I bought from them is still kicking). I've currently got a SATA1 250GB and the only reason I'd need more space is futureproofing (and more hours of DVR'd TV). The speed boost with SATA2 and twice the cache will be nice, too.
Thanks for the comments, and don't worry, you come across just fine. I posted this knowing that I've been out of the hardware loop for a while and might have some truly bass-ackwards thoughts (or just plain incompatable parts), which is why I asked. |
