In all honesty, Windows ME *is* the laughingstock of every OS ever created.
It wouldn't install properly, finding any & every excuse to fail - from BIOS incompatibilities, hardware issues, & "invalid media" errors on pristine/validated media straight from MS.
Once you got it installed, you were in for a world of driver hell - IF you could find one, chances are it wouldn't work & the manufacturer was in NO hurry to get out one that did.
IF you managed to get all the drivers for the hardware, then you ran afoul of all the software incompatibilities that ME seemed to PRIDE itself on having.
Antivirus, firewalls, & other critical software would often get flagged & cause kernel panics, BSOD's, or complete system corruptions - sometimes require a complete reinstall of the OS to fix.
I think even *Microsoft* wishes Windows ME would vanish off the face of the Earth & never get mentioned, much less USED, again.
Now, given that, if you are forced to deal with Windows ME, I offer my condolences.
You MIGHT be able to run OOo if you have the patience to install it & work around any software incompatibilities it might have.
Talk to the OOo people & check their forums for others who might have gotten it to work on Windows ME.
They may have the best tips/tricks you can do in order to lessen the level of migraines YOU can experience in getting your copy to work, too.
(Hands you a large bottle of anti-migraine medicine & a bottle of strong alcohol.)
You'll probably be needing these, my friend.
