Its the tone of voice/attitude that goes with the term. If its a male older than myself I tend to let it slide. Younger guys I'm far less likely to accept the term from and will usually tell them to not use it again.

My husband however can call me 'chica' without me getting upset because I know for him its a term of endearment.

Chick as a general term for a non specific female referenced in conversation however I'm perfectly comfortable with and will use myself.
