He worked for a while as a Solaris kernel engineer (he quit because he hated Sun's internal politics, and concessions he had to make to the Java people, amongst other things). I think that has him pretty well covered on the unix side. His own personal machine is linux, but he's hacked his kernel in a few places. His window manager of choice is fvwm2.
The most impressive story I have about him is more on the hardware side of things. He built his own pci card to manage various things inside his computer (extra fans, extra lights, extra temperature monitors, and the like). Unfortunately, while his card obeyed the PCI spec, his SoundBlaster Live! card didn't, and this caused various conflicts. Most people would probably buy a different sound card. He went in and scratched off a pin from the soundblaster card, and soldered in some new circuitry to make the card obey the spec properly.
He just let me know that he finally got around to password-protecting the webserver he uses to control the lights, curtains, and projector screen in his room. A certain mutual friend of ours was playing with it too much...
Another time, he got tired of picking up printouts in the computer lab at school (for which he was sysadmin), so he decided to design and build a robot which would monitor the printers and be able to pick up printouts and deliver them to whichever terminal ordered it. Later he added an interface to the soda machine to the robot, charged to your student account.
And yes, he has returned with the Amulet of Yendor. |
