Sit down and write a clear statement of what you saw, including a statement of what you did not see, as well. Emphasis on what you SAW, and (maybe) HEARD. You saw the van get t-boned: you say it was turning left: did you see the van signal a left turn? Was it in a left-turn lane? How do you know -- that is, what did you see to lead you to believe that it was turning left? Be this kind of picky with every "interpretive" statement that you write. Be very clear on why you believe what you say you saw: the human brain is very clever in creating explanations to fill in blanks between known -- ie visual -- data points. Stick to Raw Data, not Cooked Data, in other words.
Be as complete and as objective as you can be in this statement, and then store the statement away where you will be able to access it in the future when needed. If you do all this, you will never need it. If not, you will be VERY sorry. That's just the way this world works. |
