- why the continued secrecy?

In the days of the cold war, revealing that we had possession of an alien spacecraft (if the other side had taken it seriously) would have likely resulted in an ultimatum: share or else.

Now, in the days of radical islam and related terrorism, one can imagine an intolerant cleric or state leader attempting to trigger a nuclear war in response to a revelation that didn't fit into his world view.

And there's still the presence of Russia under Vladimir Putin, who is steadily re-establishing a totalitarian regime and might well deliver that ultimatum personally.

So when, if ever, would it be safe to reveal the possession of alien technology to the world? Maybe never?
