Stupid installers. by Phoon2007-07-01 01:40:39
Or that they don't want to restart at all? by Michiel2007-07-01 02:00:07

There is NO way to run a Windows system without running SOMETHING in the background.
Even if I open Task Manager & kill every, single, process except Explorer.exe & the SysTray, I still have to run those which means there will ALWAYS be "other running programs".
Realistically, my AntiVirus, Firewall, Spybot & others are always running & will STAY that way.
If "your" program can't handle that, then "you", as a programmer, need to be beaten to death with your own code.
People can NOT be expected to "shut down all other running programs" because that's. not. feasible.

What if they're in the middle of, say, typing up a Word document & need to install a font, but the only way they have of getting it is to run the font's installer file?
Do they save their work, shut everything down, run the installer, & then fire everything back up?
What. a. waste. of. time.

What if you're in the middle of a spreadsheet & you realize that the chart-building parts won't make the type of chart you need. But the add-on that DOES create said chart-types "requires" you to shut everything down to install it first?
Again, save everything, shut it all down, install, & re-open?
Freakin. waste. of. time.

Time is money, and if you keep wasting my time, you're sure as FPB not getting any of my money.

Furthermore, I *am* in control of my system.
I've pruned the running processes down to their bare minimums, I've firewall'd-off anything & everything I don't like, I have systems in place to alert me any time something tries to happen that I don't want, & I've tightened this system down to the point where I'm not afraid of using it online amongst the scum sites.
I don't run IE, I don't allow scripting (ActiveX, JS, & even WSH are blocked by default & only allowed on a case by case, site by site, application by application basis), I keep my AV up to date, my firewalls current, & everything ELSE that can be reasonably expected from a geek.

So the fact that I may not run a *NIX variant means *diddly*.

Telling me you'd laugh at one of my emails (You don't care that your code hurt someone & *laugh* when they complain that it has?) merely paints you as being the very kind of person who would deserve such a LARTing.
