It is an Ubuntu based distro - not quite as leading edge as the latest Ubuntu, but very stable, just as good on the hardware detection and install, and it comes with stuff that Ubuntu doesn't. Some codex and such that are no cost but not open source. It installs from the live CD, part of the install will set up the partitions and set up Grub for the dual boot.
