...one could hope that if the government made some guarantee (by its own action, or by law enforced upon others) that having all our basic needs (job, shelter, clothing, family) were met that we would be free to vote our conscience.

The problem is that then the government substitutes for money, being the entity that controls the basic needs of the people. Thus you have an increased risk of corruption within the government, and possibly worse - the very organization that needs to be controlled by unassuming politicians being PLACED in control of the basic needs (i.e. influence over) the people that are supposedly freely electing that government.

Greed/coveting is DEFINITELY the source of all evil - but how to eliminate it is the bugaboo of all mankind.
