The second amendment has been redundant for some time. Just check to see how many civilized countries that don't have it actually need it.
Two things: First, the amount of guns in private hands in the US is absolutely no barrier to a takeover by the military. Just look at how easily people were disarmed after Katrina.
And second, in a civilized country, the consent of the general population is a necessity. No coup could be successful without it, armed or not.
The second amendment was a good thing when the level of civilization was lower - when governments were mostly supported by force of arms. Now, when governments are supported more by respect and desire for the benefits of civilization, it is more counterproductive than beneficial. |
