Money - the root of all evil? by Peace_man 2007-06-12 22:43:24
At least, it seems to be at the root of the problems with US politics.

The Constitution was based on an assumption of free, well-informed people voting on which of them willing to take on the onerous duties of managing the country would be best. But free enterprise (read free, unchecked and unbalanced corporate enterprise) has now shown an ability to buy votes. Too many votes. And not buying them outright - that would be illegal. No, buying them by using the well-established principles of advertising to flood the perceptions of sheeple. And using ownership of media outlets to prevent certain information and opinions from being widely publicized.

Other countries have put in place rules preventing the worst excesses of money dictating who serve as legislators and administrative heads. I really don't know if I would consider them effective or not - but at least they seem to have kept the various legislations away from the worst excesses of money worship, and kept some semblance of social conscience present.

Does anybody see a possibility of the same happening in the US? Of rules being put in place to limit the influence of money in government? Or is this even desirable?
