It's unusual for them to flare like that, though. We used to get LOPed about every 6 weeks during the height of Extreme Squirrel Stupidity Season (aka "squirrel mating season") until Reliant put insulator cones over the lead-in points on all of the transformers on our street. Until they added the cones, periodically there would be a loud BANG from the front yard as the power died; I'd go out and see the breaker hanging loose, poke around a bit and find the squirrel carcass, and then call in the outage.
