Quality hardware would last long into obsolescence. There are still functional Twentieth Anniversary Macs but they're pre-CD-burning, pre-Ethernet, pre-everything. People would hate to throw away a perfectly functional 5 GB iPod from 2001 in favor of a 2007 Nano capable of doing everything better.
