Around here, every telco is also in the ISP business. When the same folks are responsible for the connection and the phone line that carries it, their pool of excuses for excremental service is reduced. All current ISP tech support with which I have any experience emulates a vacuum cleaner. Earthstink's emulates a Shop-Vac with a fresh filter and a large-diameter hose. None is up to the level of Columbia Internet's most inept competitor IMO. (I say this because the level of disservice I have encountered is not credible; human action in fiction has to seem possible, while reality is under no such constraint.)
