even without T9, than to abbreviate in my head. At least with CW there were only a few abbreviations, and they (mostly) made sense, particularly once you knew the history. [For instance, "HI HI HI" for laughter doesn't make much sense until you learn that in Old Morse, O is two dots with a short space between them, sounding approximately like a new-Morse I...]
