I imagine what's happening right now is that the normal box is trying to pass traffic to the internet rather than to the other box via the LAN side - anything that's not on the same subnet as the box automatically gets sent to the WAN, and if the VOIP box isn't on that side, it probably never sees it.

Is everything on the inside of the front-end box set with static IPs or using DHCP? If static, the WAN port on the VOIP box has an IP in the local subnet of the front-end box, right?
