A couple summer's ago, my dad started trying to teach my now 5-year-old nephew to cast for fishing. One of the things he did was get a really short, kid-sized fishing rod, and placed at the end of the line a 5 ounce bright orange weight. This serves as the greatest distraction to my mom's cat. Whether you're actively tossing it in the yard and letting her chase it through the grass, or if you're just weakly tossing it across the room, she'll chase this thing almost anywhere. And she doesn't actually try to grab the weight. Not until after she's found and stepped on the line so it doesn't get away from her.
