Get the ship out of the signal's range, send a shuttle back to reacquire it. Hopefully these shuttles can fly autopilot, otherwise I'd ask for volunteers among the security personnel, astronauts or scientists in that order. Have the shuttle relay any and all signals back to the main ship for further analysis until it can be determined that the signals aren't saying "Hello, visitors from another world, welcome to Flargbotl, the High Snorfl bids you a pleasant stay, meanwhile the Council of Z'Le'ks would like to know what you think of their new targeting radar and later, after the banquet will arrange for a demonstration of their new particle beam".
Hmmm... I just realized I'm about to describe the entire plot to "First Contact" by Murray Leinster. Still, I think most of it is sound reasoning, and I'd approach everything with an extreme amount of paranoia: Someone in another thread suggested a distress signal? Make triple d4 sure it really IS a distress signal, no LV-426 type fun&games for me thank you very much.
Basically I'd try to collect as much information as possible without having to come too close, risk capture or destruction of the ship or capture of such vital information as Earth's location. I'd use the shuttles and any and all probes/long range scanners/etc. at my disposal to try to determine the origin of the signal, the level of technology that's at the base of these signals (have I stumbled upon this world's version of Marconi, or have I stumbled upon an outpost of a pan-galactic empire), and the psychology of those sending the signals (peaceful, conquerors, Ferengi...). |
