| Determine various things |

First things first I'd send a signal to Earth, asking for advisement. Then I'd get one of the scientists to attempt to decode the meaning of the transmission (even if it were at a basic level: I.e. it's a repeating series of modulating pulses) to attempt to determine the messages purpose (First Contact signal, distress beacon from a downed ship etc.) At all times the scientist conducting this task would be observed by the ships psychologist, in case the message had a psychological warfare intent. Meanwhile, I'd have the ship placed in a high orbit, and a scan of the planet conducted, for any more transmissions, and other signs of intelligent life (I'd make sure these were all passive scans, in case the aliens determined the scanning as a threat, and launched an attack).
Having now determined what the purpose of the transmission was, and the presence of other signs of intelligent life (and hopefully determined a level of technology I'd be dealing with); I would send one of the shuttles into deep space, to observe our ship and immediately report to Earth if my ship was destroyed. At this point, I'd start transmitting my own signal back to the aliens, depending on the signals nature, either the message and then a series of prime numbers; or if the message was a distress call just the prime numbers. Under no circumstances would any member of my crew be allowed to land. |
