because (according to what LDS members have told me) they prefer to focus on the living Christ; the cross puts too much emphasis on His death.
Crucifixion was also a very common method that Romans used to put criminals to death; Jesus wasn't the only one crucified. But according to Christian beliefs, He was the first to die and, through His own power, come back to life, thus breaking the bonds of death for everyone (hence the big Easter celebration, but how chocolate rabbits and colored eggs are involved is a different story).
Though I'm no longer LDS, I still think the cross isn't a very fitting symbol to represent a gospel centered on mankind's salvation. It was just an instrument of torture and death, and the prominent display of suffering Christs in churches everywhere seems better suited to induce guilt than to inspire people to higher ideals. That's just more evidence in favor of my belief that most churches are little more than a means to impose control over the masses. |
