have both visible on the desktop, in one window have the item so you can hit F5 every few minutes/seconds to see the price and the time remainins

In the other one make a bid on the item at your max and do everything except the final click to accept the bid. I wouldn't do this until there was only a couple of minutes left.

Then, when there are 10 seconds left, click BID in the other window to complete the bid. If you prepped it right, the bid will take effect with 2-3 seconds to spare.

Don't trust the ebay system to take your bid with under 5 sec left - lag can kill you or their system might refuse it.
