SF (non-Military) Question of the Day! by Illiad2007-05-18 00:01:48
Depends how you count space elevators by admeralthrawn2007-05-18 00:13:28

The calculation of the energy needed (in the right form!) to transport all that material up up in the sky.
I doubt if we can obtain so much energy and as it is released during the process that that amount is healthy for earth's atmosphere (we still need the surface for food and stuff?)
However, I'm aware that we can start with a "thin" construction as once the space elevator is established I think I remember transport costs significant less energy / energy is taken out of rotation energy of the earth itself.
If the latter is true we have an additional problem: if we move such a significant mass 36.000 km away, Earth's rotation will slow down and the geosync orbit shift...
As our planet is slowing down anyway (days are getting longer, e.g. by tidal effects), how long will such a platform be enough in sync to use the space elevators? :-)
