What you don't understand English now? by AndyA 2007-05-18 11:43:08
Translation into American of the first few lines:

FIRST NPOWER TEST, LORD'S:
First match in the series sponsored by NPower. The match is at Lord's cricket ground

England 553-5 v West Indies (stumps, day two)
England 553 runs, 5 players out so far. West Indies have yet to bat. End of play, day 2

Matt Prior became the first England wicket-keeper to hit a century on Test debut as England made West Indies toil on the second day at Lord's.
Matt Prior is the first English player who plays in the role of wicket-keeper (A bit like catcher in baseball) to score 100 runs in a single innings in his first ever test match game. (Test match = 5 day version of the game, the "highest" level of cricket)
England are made life hard for the West Indies side during the second day of play.

Ian Bell and Paul Collingwood also made tons after Alastair Cook's on Thursday.
Two other players also scored over 100 runs today. One player had already scored over 100 yesterday.

It was the first time since 1938 that four Englishmen had reached three figures in one innings of a Test.
The first time since 1938 that England have looked like they can actually play the game they invented.

Eventually, England reached 553-5 when, having turned down the offer of bad light, Bell and Prior had to walk off when the umpires ruled against them.
At the end of play england were at 553 runs with 5 players out. The batsmen had previously been asked if they wished to stop playing since the light was going and most people don't like balls thrown at their head at 100mph in the dark but decided to continue. Eventually the umpires decided that it was too dark to continue despite the batsman's wishes and ended the days play.

It's all perfectly straight forward ;-)
