SF (non-Military) Question of the Day! by Illiad2007-05-18 00:01:48

Rapid evolution in attitudes, rigorously enforced. by skern 2007-05-18 04:51:53
Mankind pollutes and destroys because we CAN do so. Stupidity in space is rapidly lethal, and would be frowned on by your coworkers and co-colonists.

But don't expect freedom to take a leap forward. This ain't no American West type of frontier, where you can just move away if you don't like the rules. Folks who can't conform won't survive long. The big problem is that rigid environments encourage caste systems, which lead to leaders who do stupid things because they really believe that the rules don't apply to them if they are inconvenient. Eg: "A Distant Mirror" and the behavior of the french nobles in dramatic disregard of their self-interest, let alone that of the rest of the population.
