| I did something stupid yesterday. |

Not long after a somewhat heated meeting, I went to my boss to discuss a certain issue. I started explaining that I've lost most of my reasons and motivations to stay in this company. (That got his attention.) But after somewhat of slalom of "on the other hand" I got to the point that my problem with the company happens to be the very same problem he was yelling about a bit earlier. Well, I proposed a solution (which I will surely regret) and we worked out a plan. On Monday's staff meeting he'll announce that, in short, all developers now have a new boss - me. The most immediate goal of this change is to improve cooperation between the team members and enforce some standard of quality throughout our production. So I'm now suddenly in charge of 8 people (9th will probably be hired shortly), most of which aren't used to the idea of reporting to someone other than an already overworked CEO (and the rest aren't very fond of that idea either) and I'm no more experienced in this either. Heck, I don't even know what my new title should be, we already have a technical director, who's responsible for hardware, software and every other thing technical, but not people, so I can't have that title.
Anyway, I plan to start my new function by introducing a couple of changes, first of which is a periodic developer meeting with everyone presenting their current project and the basic concepts of solution, so that I can keep track of who does what and that people are more aware of their surroundings so to speak; there's no point in two people inventing the same solution individually. I'll also have everyone fill out self- and peer-evaluation forms (which I have yet to write). I worked here longer than any other developer, but I only know my point of view; I still need to know how well others work among themselves and how they see themselves and others, so I know what I'm working with and what can be improved and how.
Does anyone have any advice for me? Other than to keep a written record of everything, wear knife-resistant clothing and never expose my neck? And keep my back against the wall and be closest to the door on that staff meeting? |
