SF (non-Military) Question of the Day! by Illiad2007-05-18 00:01:48
Depends on how dangerous alien biospheres are to.. by FNORDer 2007-05-18 01:19:45
us on a biological level and whether or not we can adapt them for our purposes. If the answers to these questions are "very" and "no" then we're likely to be living in arcologies. If the answers are "not very" and "yes" then we'll likely live more on planets. Likely the answers will be somewhere between the two, and depending on how common these easily-adaptable environments are will determine which gets more focus.

Gravity will also play a part. Human biology will require gravities close to earth-norm, unless you want to get into some complex bioengineering.

Honestly, all things considered, I'd say it's likely that for a few centuries after we develop superluminal travel we'll be living predominantly in arcologies.
