Convulsive coughing by Illiad2007-05-09 13:49:03
Ye Olde Coughe Remedies by smiffy 2007-05-09 14:36:53
1) Senega and Ammonia. Available over the counter in Australia, based on an old cough preparation which was obviously more exciting as the label claims "does not contain chloroform". As my coughs tend to be six coughs then bronchitis, I use this admittedly foul preparation which I find highly effective. I believe that it works by scaring the cough away.

2) Hot cider and ginger. Vouchsafed to be by the daughter of an old Devonshire farmer. My version uses a huge pinch of ground ginger, a small pinch of ground cardamom and a small pinch of ground cinnamon or cassia. I tend to mix these together and then heat in a mug in the microwave. A generous slug of Calvados (apple brandy) or dark rum may be added.

Folks from the USA, where there is rather dubious usage of the word "cider" should note that this is what you would call "hard cider" - it is an alcoholic beverage. All should note that this is REAL cider (a la scrumpy [scumble?]) not the fizzy muck sold under names like 'Strongbow'.

This is more a cold/'flu remedy and is taken just before bedtime to get a good night's sleep. If you take it at any other time of day, you will probably still get a good night's sleep, there and then.

3) Any soft food (stew, curry, etc) with plenty of garlic and chilli in it. Whilst I would eat this just for pleasure, I have found that it relieves sinus/congestion within minutes.

4) (3) washed down with (2).

Good luck.
