Between the Japanese and Chinese the US is pretty much owned. If Japan decides to re-write their constitution (Something that came up a while back in the news) then the US will of course "express grave concerns" but ultimately do nothing.

If Japan (or China) starts dumping the US currency they have horded over the years back on the market they could destroy the US economy pretty quickly. And yes I understand it would hurt them economically in the long run. I also know there are rabid factions in the Japanese government just like there are in the US that would not care.
