and I heard horror stories from a tech who used to work for the power company (coworker got fried on a transformer or something).

I'm usually pretty careful around electricity. HS boyfriend taught me how to bleed storage caps in the back of a TV, and I've managed to split a 220 line into 2 110 lines when we took out an electric dryer in favor of bringing our kitchen up to code (i.e. seperate circuits for each appliance).

However, nowadays, I hire a licensed electrician, because I can afford to, and then the city doesn't give me trouble with the permits.
