At least they could in 2000 so I assume they still can.

I could even have 8 internal speed dials on my phone on keys with built in LEDs. If that person was busy the LED would light up. Since the LEDs were 3 colour you could also if someone was logged in or not on that phone (very popular with call centres). This all worked even if the people were in a different office 50 miles away connected to a different physical PBX.
Operators or receptionists could get an extension to the phone which gave them 50 more keys like that.
Dragging and dropping a call is nice for some one who does that full time but some offices use the assistants / admins as backup operators in case there is a sudden rush of calls or people in reception. They don't want to have an application up on their computer all the time and so being able to see at a glance who within a given group is available is very handy in that situation.
It also crashed slightly less than a windows PC ;-)
