You see, there is a problem... by VivianC 2007-05-09 11:43:23
...he is a naturalized US citizen and the US does not have an extradition treaty with Cuba or Venezuela. So there is no legal way to send him back to either country for trial. Being a naturalized citizen, he can't be deported. So how to get rid of him? Challenge the naturalization. If he committed fraud in his application, he can be stripped of his citizenship and deported. The country to which he then goes can decide if they want to hand him over to Cuba or Venezuela.

But the investigators screwed up. Seems he is also under investigation for other crimes and they tried to get information about those at the same time. The judge tossed out all the information so the case dies.

This is hardly a case of the US government giving the guy sanctuary. They are trying to strip his citizenship and deport him.
