Maybe it's just the Cisco junk we have. by AndyA2007-05-09 09:32:37
They may be behind, but not by 10 years. by theanomaly2007-05-09 09:47:25
I have an issue with your first paragraph. by AndyA 2007-05-09 10:00:08
"inherent QoS" on IP systems?

The very fact that you need to mention QoS indicates that it's a problem.

The PBX system I worked on you knew the exact data rate and latency to every single phone. Those numbers were fixed and didn't depend on any outside factors such as the number of calls going on, files being transferred etc... Every phone could be on a call at exactly the same time and it was identical to there only being a single call in the whole system. That is inherent QoS.

Now if you wanted every single phone in the system to ring at exactly the same time that was tricky, there would be a few seconds ripple between the first and the last but no more than that.

A single cable to the desktop and the ability to mix manufacturers a little are the only meaningful benefits of an IP phone system in the office.

I say they are 10 years behind because what I have seen is still far less usable than what I design 12 years ago.
