IP telephones - Any good? by hieraco2007-05-09 09:09:30

That's not so much an "IP Phone" as an ATA by hobbs 2007-05-09 09:43:51
Which isn't really a bad thing, just keeping things clear. Anyway, I have VoIP service in my house, because I hardly use the phone at all there, but I wanted to be reachable, and my cell signal there is nearly nil. I started off with SellVOIP. They're really cheap ($1/mo/line plus $0.01/min, $1 setup) but not exactly reliable. I had my line go out for a while because their payment processing interface started throwing database errors so I couldn't give them money. And they've had other problems.

More recently I've been using Junction Networks. They're a bit more expensive ($2/mo/line plus $0.03/min, $7 setup) but a lot more professional. And I still end up using about $5/mo tops. I like it.

Of course, anything like this requires at least a minor geek factor (find and buy an unlocked ATA, configure it with the right hostname and account information) compared with the "just buy a box" approach of Vonage, but they're also more straightforward and decent to deal with. I'm sick of people trying to rope me into plans.
