I'm sorry, I should have been more clear about that.

What I meant: the clustering within subjects violates the 'independence of observations' assumption that regression requires. My question is whether adding the 'subject' variable to the regression equation is a legitimate way of dealing with that. I think it ought to be, as it accounts for the within-subject variance; but I'm not sure.
