I need some help with a XP network problem.. :( by Bonzo 2007-05-06 13:44:14
I really thought I was going to be able to fix this myself, but...
You might want to read this post for some background info.
The computer is running XP Pro, Avast 4.7 and automatic Winupdate.

I was streaming some videos from the "server" when WMP told me that the file couldn't be found.
Next thing I know, the network shares that were open when the error occured, weren't available any more..
So I try to connect to the server via VNC; not accepting my connection!
So I go out to the computer, reboot it and check the VNC settings.
They were altered somehow..
It was set to not accept any connections, and some other small issues..
Ok, I change the settings back to what I want, and go back to my laptop to configure the shares.
That's when I realize that I can't reach the computer by it's hostname any more..
Got to use the IP.
The computer is allso not able to find other computers on the network by hostnames.
Pinging or VNC using IP addresses is fine.
Filesharing is not!
The computer claims that folders are shared, and can open the shares by using \\ownhostname\share
The computer can reach the internet, and pinging domains works like a charm!

I've checked most of the services, ran a couple of network wizards but no luck!
I can't think of anything else to do..
Anyone here who has a tip?
