| Interesting, maybe... |

But I have to take issue with one of his statements (one that he made in the comments):
> I've never heard anyone claim before that your nervous system can survive with blood glucose levels before 40 mg/dl for any reason, under any circumstances, for any length of time.
(I assume he meant "below 40 mg/dl", because "before" doesn't make any sense.)
I have Type 1 diabetes. My blood sugar levels have been *way* below 40 before, and I'm still here. No, it wasn't good (and the only reason they got that low is because the first things to go are my higher brain functions: the part of my brain that realizes what's going on), but it's certainly survivable. (I think the lowest I've ever tested was 25 or 30.) Of course I haven't ever let it go for very long either (as above, it's BAD).
And I should also note that depending on your definition of "conscious", I may not have been conscious either. My brain still worked (I got to the point where I did a blood sugar test, usually after taking some kind of glucose), mostly; my eyes were still open, and I could still react to what I saw -- but I usually don't remember the things I do while my sugar's that low. And I usually can't interpret what I see correctly. *And* I usually feel really tired. Plus, as I said before, my higher brain functions just aren't there -- if I try to talk, I can never think of the words that I want to say, for instance.
But "for any length of time" would include "for 10 seconds", and my sugars have been below 40 for much longer than 10 seconds.
(OTOH, maybe I'm just weird...) |
