One man's "premium" is another man's "gouging." by esbita 2007-04-30 17:54:00
Watch gas rise a dime a gallon, and you'll have people whining about gouging and collusion and windfall oil company profits and blah blah blah.

For the jerkwads who took outrageous money for unfinished work...they should be made to clean highway rest stop toilets...on hands and knees...with toothbrushes. Preferably their OWN toothbrushes.

$18K to remove a couple trees is unconscionable, I'll grant that. But the proper "middle ground" is going to be a bit subjective.

Part of the reason is that there are a lot of variables that go into a construction bid. The price of gas being a big one. Remember that gas was a good $4/gallon after the hurricane hit. At least a dollar a gallon rise over a couple weeks. The higher cost to haul down building supplies will be reflected in the price. Market conditions? Or "gouging?" Filling the tank of your Ford F-250 pickup will cost more, as well as running the generators for your tools. The guys on your construction crew will want a raise, since filling THEIR trucks' tanks will cost more...and rents have sharply risen for the homes still left standing. Why not just start anew somewhere else, where the streets don't smell like sewer backup and the fridges work? They'll need incentive to stay.

These figures are going to figure in to prices not being what they were that spring. And then when some nutty ol' granny cries "price gouging!!!" because you didn't give her the cut rate "got nothing else going on this week" estimate for her repairs...threatens to call the Attorney General on you as blackmail... why should you even bother?

I don't worship Almighty Mammon either...but I can understand wanting to stay ahead of your bills. I don't see a lot of contractors living in McMansions.
