And Germany is very much a multi-culturist country.

Strictly speaking, by that standard, they should adopt laws that reflect the cultures within the country, legalizing the beating of wives by husbands in situations like this.

They have not, thank goodness, done this.

They're basically trying to stay a multicultural country, without adopting the laws that go against the grain of most cultures.

If they simply say "No, we're not going to do this because ... ", then it opens up the door to deny other cultures various things on the same premise. Now, for things like beating your wife, there won't be much of a problem, but where does one draw the line? Does it become OK to slaughter animals in your front yard? Is it ok to cover yourself up because your religion says so, thus pretty much nullifying the point of passport/ID pictures, etc?

Germany is walking a very thin line to accomodate both multiculturalism and satisfy the law for so many different groups.
