But as soon as one of the people behind the closed doors opens them, by INVITING any authority (police, ambulance, social worker, etc) into the situation then the law of the land should take over.

Going off some of the other comments here (didn't read the article myself) the woman in the article had gone to the police to seek their protection and IMHO once that happened the culture argument is null.

To clarify that... If any adult wishes to stay in a situation with a non-majority culture they can and everyone involved should be protected from prosecution. But once any adult reaches outside the culture for help (or is unable, for ANY reason, to say it's ok and part of my culture) - then any legal protection is gone and the legal (or whichever) system takes over as it would for any citizen.

Kids... are a whole other ball of wax and I'm not even gonna go there.
