question for UK Ufies by bobmon2007-04-30 14:56:44
AFAIK Jury trials are required for criminal cases by AndyA 2007-04-30 16:06:52
There has been some talk of getting rid of them for complex fraud trials on the grounds that the jury has no hope of understanding the case most of the time.

Jury selection in the UK consists of "do you know anyone involved in the case?", that is about it. They are the first 12 people out of the hat with no direct links to the case.
There is none of the US style selection where lawyers will stack the jury with people they think they can convince with emotional arguments rather than facts or people biased in their favour.

More minor civil cases in the UK go before magistrates rather than a jury. Things like traffic offences, arguments between neighbours, child support disagreements and enforcement etc. Magistrates are a group of 3 volunteers with a small amount of training and assisted by a legal adviser. Magistrates are limited in the sentences that can give and can pass matters on to a criminal court for a judge and jury to try if they feel it is required.

This system combined with the lack of jury selection means that unlike the US where you will be notified of jury duty every few years it's fairly rare to be called to serve in the UK.
